The week that was....

I have been really busy recently, as you may have noticed from my upcoming events I have a few pieces in upcoming exhibitions. I'm looking forward to the 'Rare Art' exhibition in London on the 14th of April. Submitting the piece for the exhibition has reminded me how much I enjoyed painting the glitchy art works. I feel this will be the direction I go with the Sheffield cityscapes.

There is also an exhibition in the Bank Street Arts Gallery, I'm thinking of creating either an algorithmical or glitchy urban art piece for it. Ideally I'd like to have the work as a response to the gallery.

On other news I'm trying to learn how to use watercolours. These are so alien to me, I love to work into the paint building up details and moving the paint on the canvas. This is a big no no with watercolour. That at much I have learnt. I have a book on watercolour painting techniques but to be honest it is really dry reading. I prefer to do and learn on the 'job' but I think I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and read this book. I was hoping to just scan it and pick up the mystical secrets of the watercolourists.

Here are some of the works I've done in watercolour which I'm not too embarassed by.

Painting in the city

If you've been following my misadventures, you'll know I'm on  a quest to improve my art skills. I have decided that the best way to do this is to focus in on one subject or theme. I don't  have many options for portraiture and life drawing, I can't bubble up the enthusiasm for a still life every day and landscapes are not me right now. So I've decided to focus in on buildings and architecture, cityscapes if you will.

My aim is to build skill in using water colours as well as oil paint. I've already got a number of works painted. But they have been completed from photographs I have taken.  My aim is to do more observational paintings.

Here's the gallery I've completed so far. ('Of the city' and 'From the city' are older works)

Not so much...Sad face

I worked my tiny Irish fingers to the bone to day and made a lot of mistakes. What's the old saying “Can't make an omelette without killing a few people.” -Neil Gaiman Neverwhere.

No-one got killed but I did murder a few portraits. Nothing I'm going to show the world. So heres an image from todays fun. Only one painting, but I give you  a bonus work in progress shot. You lucky lucky lucky people.

And just for being nice here's a pun.  The lower image is basically the finished piece, but the windows are not quite right. They need a bit of glazing. Boom puntastic and true.

Me Me Me

I want to get better at portraiture but I have no-one but myself to model for me.

I'm getting quicker at myself portraits. Day one below.

Self at Angle

Day 2

self at angle,

I'm pretty much done. The work needs tweaking on the lower section and a little here and there up on top.
